Can I Give My Dog Fish Oil?If you use fish oil as a dietary supplement you probably wonder if your dog can also benefit from it. Many people swear by this popular dietary because of the supposed health benefits. So can you give fish oil to a dog? Let’s examine in some detail.

Even though any fish can be a source of fish oil, it is usually harvested from fatty fishes such as mackerel, salmon, sardine, herring, and so forth. The most important ingredient in fish oil is the Omega-3 fatty acids. However, Eicosapentaenoic acid, also known as EPA, and Docosahexaenoic acid, also known as DHA, play a very important part in fish oil.

The alleged health benefits that come from taking fish oil-based supplements is a long one. It includes the following: reducing the risk of heart disease, normalizing blood pressure as well as cholesterol levels, helping with anxiety and depression problems, promoting better eyesight, helping with diabetes and weight loss, alleviating arthritis pains, promoting brain activity, helping with skin problems, as well as infertility problems, and even more.

Can I Give My Dog Fish Oil? Answer: Not Necessary

When it comes to the question of whether fish oil or any other dietary supplement that is used for people is safe for our pets, it can be said that there isn’t a yes or no answer here.

It is safe to use for your dog, but some other dietary supplements might not be safe to use for pets. It all depends on the supplement you are using, as well as the fact that your pet might not need any supplements to their diet.

Yes, you can give your dog fish oil. However, it is always a good idea to contact your veterinarian and see what they have to say about this idea. However, it is generally a good idea to add Omega-3 fatty acids to your pet’s diet, because these acids will help them fight off diseases and stay healthy for a very longer time.

The only thing you should be careful about is the blood-thinning effect, but this is something your vet will warn you about. Also, do not be afraid if your dog starts having a bad fish odor on their breath or skin, as this is commonly a side effect of using fish oil as a supplement.

Health Benefits for K9s

Generally speaking, health benefits related to fish oil for canine usage are pretty much the same as the benefits people have reported over the years. So, you can expect your pooch to have less chances of heart disease, as well as good levels of cholesterol.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are found in fish oil, will help your dog fight kidney disease, and big dogs will certainly benefit from fighting off arthritis with the help of these fatty acids. Finally, it is believed that Omega-3 fatty acids can help with cancer prevention in dogs.

Remember that, when it comes to the benefits of fish oil, the numerous health benefits are really not proven. So few have actually been scientifically verified, and most of them were not consistent enough to be called real health benefits. This goes for both people and canines.

K9 Fish Oil Dosage

The best way to decide on the dosage of fish oil for your dog is to consult your vet. However, it is generally believed that the dosage of 20mg per pound of weight is standard. This will vary in some situations, as there are fish oil supplements that are of a higher quality than others, so they will need to be given in smaller dosages.

A better way to go would be to buy a high quality dog food so they’re getting this in a form that is easy to digest.

Use It Cautiously

It is very important to remember that all supplements to your dog’s standard diet must be used cautiously. Therefore, before you start using it for your dog, it is crucial to ask and find out the right dosage, as well as which of the many fish oil products you should use for your dog. After all, this is something that should bring positive results, and not something that will harm your dog.
