Are you wondering if your dog can safely eat some sushi?

It’s good that you are checking first because the answer isn’t so simple.

First off, sushi would be an expensive treat for a pet pooch.

Can I Give My Dog Sushi?Purely from a cost perspective, this food is an indulgence that you’d typically save for yourself. But that’s besides the point…

Ingredients greatly matter if you plan to share sushi with your dog.

We’ll be getting into what’s OK and what’s not, but also of upmost important is avoiding harmful bacteria and/or parasites. Any type of raw food, sushi certainly included, is dangerous if it has been spoiled.

Your Dog Can Have Fresh Sushi (excluding some ingredients)

Be sure to throw away leftovers if there’s any chance they are no longer fresh.

Otherwise, assuming you know all of the ingredients, sharing a bit of sushi with your dog should be A-OK.

Most sushi is simply rolled-up cooked rice with raw fish and/or vegetables. Sliced cucumbers and seaweed is common. Egg is also used.

Certain ingredients should be off limits to your dog. One example would be spices!

Avoid Spices in Sushi

There are many innovative sushi recipes.

Japanese style is the original. Asians in general, but also westerners, commonly incorporate wasabi into their sushi.

But obviously your dog should not be eating wasabi!

In addition, Thai-style sushi is usually spicy and also contains garlic.

These questionable ingredients probably aren’t good for your dog and are best avoided. Play it safe.

What About Avocados?

Most store-bought sushi contains a bit of avocado which is super healthy.

Some, however, would argue that this ingredient is harmful for dogs due to a toxin called persin.

We think it isn’t a factor because it usually takes a lot of avocado to harm a dog.

Symptoms And Sicknesses

Maybe you came here worried that your dog is sick after eating some sushi.

This often occurs when a curious canine chows down for the first time.

As is the case with many new foods (and especially sushi) gastrointestinal problems may surface including:

  • Diarrhea
  • Loose stools
  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting

Most times, dogs will experience such symptoms for a short time.

They usually recover on their own. Canine are quite good at purging their systems.

Spoiled sushi, however, could be a serious cause for concern.

Hydration And Other Help

Never give your dog human foods that you would not eat.

For sushi, this approach is even more important. No matter the reason for sickness, provide plenty of fresh water to avoid dehydration.

Bring your dog to a trusted vet if they are sick or getting worse.

Consumption of contaminated or rotten raw foods can be quite serious. Bacteria and/or parasites may overwhelm the body.

The Bottom Line

A small amount of fresh sushi will be harmless for your dog.

Just be sure to avoid feeding any recipes that contain spices or other questionable ingredients.

And never provide oldish leftover sushi to a precious pet. It’s a recipe for doggie disaster.

Any type of raw seafood can quickly spoil and sicken your animal!

  1. The picture used at the top of this article is not a photo of sushi. That is a picture of Gimbap which is a Korean dish. Sushi is Japanese cuisine which is cold boiled rice moistened with rice vinegar and topped with raw seafood. Gimbap may look similar, but there are (usually) no raw ingredients in the roll. It’s mostly comprised of cooked vegetables and cooked meat.
