Dogs Can Eat Bell Peppers (red is recommended)

They are low in calories and high in valuable nutrients. Pets can benefit.

Bell peppers are a great treat for your dog, assuming Nightshades are agreeable. If there are no inflammatory effects, a bell pepper or two would be healthy for your dog.

Keep it simple! Feed them plain and in moderation and especially when doing so for the first time.

Interestingly, the color you provide actually matters…

K9s And Capsicum Colors

Fully ripened bell peppers are best. The healthiest choice for dogs are the red-colored kind.

Compared to green or yellow, red bell peppers tend to have more carotenoid phytonutrients, beta-carotene, anti-oxidants and vitamins A & C.

These happen to be significant nutrients. There’s no reason to believe that canines can’t also benefit.

Bell peppers may reduce inflammation which is wonderful for older arthritic dogs.

Never Spicy Peppers

Do not confuse bell peppers, which are not spicy, with pepperoni or chili or any type of hot pepper. Many vegetables in this family are off limits.

Spicy curry is a whole other topic!

Red is associated with spiciness, yet the reddish bell pepper is healthiest and most appropriate for dogs. Of course, too much people food is a bad thing and that includes bell peppers too.

The Surprising Benefits

There is some evidence that bell peppers can reduce flatulence.

If your dog is quite gassy try providing this healthy food. It is worth a shot! They are also known to be good for constipation and gastrointestinal health.

Further, this food improves circulation which is a rare attribute.

Bell peppers may even help to prevent some types of cancer! At least in theory, your dog can benefit from this tasty and crunchy treat.

A Good Snack Option

We think that bell peppers are an excellent idea for rewarding a pet dog.

As we have already detailed, they contain lots of nutrients. An equally important factor is that they are low in calories and fat.

This veggie will not crowd out your dog’s regular chow. On the contrary, bell peppers improve metabolism by reducing triglyceride levels.

If you have an overweight dog, you are on the right track!

The Bottom Line

You can feed non-spicy bell peppers if nightshades don’t seem to affect your dog.

They are low in calories which is ideal. The antioxidants, beta-carotene and other vitamins are also great.

You can share bell peppers plain or mixed in with dog food.
